I began this project working to bring my digital work to a true 3D space, creating not only design but an experience. With the help of my professor, David Hardy, I was able to test the capabilities of projection mapping as design. Taking a more artful approach than I have with most design processes in the past, I took to music as an inspiration, mixing songs that had an ethereal atmosphere to them, helping me immerse viewers into the sense of wonder I created. Combining my motion design work with projection mapping technology, I found a whole new world of experimental design I cannot wait to further explore and implement into other aspects of my design for myself.
I began with creating an array of canvases on each wall, enabling me to design each animation to fit the three dimensions of the wall now that it had more depth, and was no longer flat. The canvases extruding from the wall created such a surreal effect, as they disappeared under the projections. The illusion of a flat wall, yet a multi-surfaced projection inclined viewers to interact with each piece more so than anything I have made before.
